Bonobos apparently search for a lost member injured by a snare

この報告は、ボノボのみならず霊長類において、大きなパーティまたは群れが、遊動について来られなくなった個体を探して長い距離を戻った初めての例です。 　観察は、コンゴ民主共和国ルオー保護区ワンバで行われました。2011年9月8日、20頭からなるボノボのパーティが湿原林で遊動中、オトナオス（マルスという名前）がワイヤーで作られた罠にかかってしまいました。マルスはワイヤーが結びつけられた枝を折り取って罠から逃れたのですが、手にかかったままのワイヤーが、ツルに引っかかり動けなくなってしまいました。他の個体は、ワイヤーにかかったツルをほどく、ワイヤーをマルスの手からはずそうとするといった行動を見せました。一度はツルを外すことに成功したものの、木の上でワイヤーが再度引っかかり、マルスは動けなくなりました。他の個体は、夕方になるとマルスを湿原林に残して、1.8km離れた乾燥林に移動して夜を過ごしました。しかし次の朝、前日とほとんど同じ構成のパーティが、マルスが罠にかかった場所を再度訪れました。移動経路は、前日に湿原に入ったとき、出て行ったときと全く同じで、湿原林を移動中に長時間の採食を行うことはありませんでした。遊動に前日と同じルートを使うことは、非常に魅力的な採食場所を目指すとき以外はまずあり得ないことです。パーティは、マルスが罠にかかった場所にたどりつき、そこにもうマルスがいないことを確かめると、採食を行うことなく乾燥林の方角へと戻っていきました。これらのことから、ボノボ達は、前日動けなくなったマルスを探すために湿原林に戻ったのだと考えられます。この出来事には、ボノボの、常に大きなパーティで遊動を行う傾向と、できるだけ集合性を保とうとする傾向が影響していると考えられます。

This is the first report to demonstrate that a large mixed-sex party of bonobos traveled　a long distance to return to a location of a snare apparently to search for a member　that had been caught in it. An adult male was caught in a metallic snare in a swamp　forest at Wamba, Luo Scientific Reserve, Democratic Republic of the Congo. After he　escaped from the snare by breaking a sapling to which the snare was attached, other　members of his party assisted him by unfastening the snare from lianas in which it was　caught, and licked his wound and tried to remove the snare from his fingers. In the late　afternoon, they left him in the place where he was stuck in the liana and traveled to the　dry forest where they usually spend the night. The next morning, they traveled back　1.8km to re-visit the location of the injured male. When they confirmed that he was no　longer there, they returned to the dry forest to forage. This is unlike the usual ranging　patterns of the party, suggesting that the bonobos travelled with the specific intention of　searching for this injured individual who had been left behind. The incident described　in this report likely occurred because bonobos usually range in a large mixed-sex party　and try to maintain group cohesion as much as possible.
