研究概要

A) アフリカに生息する野生チンパンジー・ボノボの生態と行動

上原重男，M.A. Huffman，橋本千絵，座馬耕一郎（学振特別研究員）

タンザニア国マハレ山塊とルボンド島(ヴィクトリア湖)，ウガンダ国カリンズ森林とブドンゴ森林，ギニア国ボッソウ，コンゴ民主共和国ワンバなどのアフリカ各地を調査地として，チンパンジーを中心に生態学的調査をしている．最近では地域間・集団間の文化（伝統）の違いを明らかにし，その進化的意義を考察ために以下の研究を行った．マハレでは，同所的に生息する哺乳類に及ぼすチンパンジーの狩猟圧を考察するために，大・中型ほ乳類のうちチンパンジーの被食種の生息密度をモニタリングしている．また，チンパンジーのシラミの密度を推定し，チンパンジーの毛づくろい行動に与える影響を調べた．地域差が極端なアリ食行動の背景にあるアリ相の量的比較を，マハレとカリンズのあいだで試みた．類人猿の自己治療行動研究の一環として，チンパンジーの寄生虫感染症とSIVcpzウィルスによる感染を，さまざまな地域間で比較している．ルボンド島では，移入された西アフリカ由来のチンパンジーの行動生態学的研究を 2000年に開始し，島全域の植物環境を集中的に調査している．カリンズ森林では，メスの性行動について研究を行った．マハレ山塊とボッソウで，野生チンパンジーのメス2頭が性皮をこする行動の観察について，ボノボや飼育下チンパンジーの研究と比較し報告した．

B) ニホンザルの行動生態学的研究

ニホンザルの自然群や餌づけ群，飼育コロニーで調査をしている．嵐山（京都府），小豆島（香川県）高崎山（大分県），幸島（宮崎県）等の餌づけ群と霊長研内の放飼場コロニーでは，石遊びなどの文化的行動の社会的学習・伝播機構の比較研究をした．また，屋久島（鹿児島県）では体温調節行動について研究を行った．

C) 屋久島のニホンザルの生態学的研究

半谷吾郎（学振特別研究員），座馬耕一郎（学振特別研究員）

屋久島（鹿児島県）では，海岸線から山頂部までの環境の変化が，野生ニホンザルの生息密度，活動時間配分，食物競合，社会関係などに与える影響を研究した．とくに高標高地域では，夏季に全国からボランティアの学生を募って一斉調査を行い，密度や群れ構成などの人口学的資料を集めた．また森林伐採がニホンザルに及ぼす影響やニホンザルによる種子散布について研究を行なった．
