Collaborative Study at National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA) and Participation to the International Workshop on Tropical Biodiversity Conservation
Report: Miyabi Nakabayashi
Date: 2012/10/21 - 2012/11/ 1
I participated in the "International Network for Tropical Biodiversity Conservation Focusing on the Studies on Large Animals" held at INPA, and I
made a poster presentation.
Then, on 25th-27th October, we have carried out the field study visiting Amazon river and tropical Amazon rainforest (hereafter ZF2).
I marveled at the high density and diversity of plants belonging to Arecaceae at ZF2.
Moreover, I was impressed with the overall height of the forest including emergent trees because that would be lower than those of Borneo.
Additionally, the tree crowns in ZF2 seemed to be "connected each other" whereas those of Borneo seem to be more "separated".
These impressions may indicate that fruit is relatively accessible resource for wildlife in Amazon compared to that in Borneo considering unstable fruit availability and unlinked canopies.
This would be important to think about the evolution and adaptation to arboreal life of animals in Amazonian and Bornean forests.
