Field experience of wild animals in two conservation areas of Sabah,

Report: SUGIURA HIDEKI

Date: 2011/6/20 - 201/7/1

We visited two conservation areas, Imbak Canyon and Maliau Basin, in Sabah, Malaysia. Imbak canyon is potentially a good habitat for various wild animals. However, we could not see wild animals so much, perhaps due to the influence of hunting. In Maliau Basin, we saw an unique landscape grown on the ground of poor nutrition. Vegetation changes with gradient of land, due to the amount of soil nutrition, which was quite impressive. We also saw huge areas of oil palm plantations outside of the conservation areas, which is a large impact to wild animals and their habitats there. Overall, this visit was very good opportunity to see present status of conservation and development of Borneo.
