Direct estimation of de novo mutation rates in a chimpanzee parent-offspring trio by ultra-deep whole genome sequencing.

We determined the unprecedented amount of whole genome sequences from a chimpanzee parent-offspring trio and disclosed the precise mutation rates and modes through the transmission of genomes from parents to offspring. Through the transmission of genomes, very rare but a certain frequency of de novo (new) mutations have occurred (illustrated in the figure as 'T' in the father chromosome substitute to 'C' in the inherited chromosome in offspring). About 75% of this type of mutation has occurred in the paternally-derived germline cells (male-biased mutation).
