Differences in ranging patterns between sexes and between estrous and anestrous females in wild chimpanzes.

I conducted a research on ranging patterns of wild chimpanzees in the Kalinzu Forest, Uganda from September 2004 to September 2005. I analyzed differences in the ranging patterns between sexes and between estrous and anestrous females. The previous studies showed that anestrous females do not overlap their home ranges in eastern chimpanzees (Williams et al, 2002) while they overlap their home ranges and use similar home range to those of males in western chimpanzees (Lehmann and Boesch, 2005). In Kalinzu, the female home ranges were similar to those of males and they considerably overlapped each other. However, the party composition in Kalinzu was similar to that reported for eastern chimpanzees and females tended to forage in a mother party. These results were presented at the International Primatological Society XXII Congress Edinburgh. I also discuss ecology of chimpanzees with other researchers.
