HOPE reportNumber:20-053 palaeopathological research of the injuries found on the Shang dynasty human skeletal remains in China Report:OYABU YUMIKO Date:2008/07/08 - 2008/08/03 I visited the Dr. Bai who is the deputy director of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing to discuss about my research. After the discussion, I carried out palaeopathological investigation of the human skeletal remains of the Shang dynasty at the Anyang field station. The skeletal remains came from two sites: the Xinanzhuang site and the Heihelu site. The human skeletal remains of the Xinanzhuang site were excavated from burials and a sacrificial pit; the Heihelu site's skeletal remains were unearthed from burials. The total number of samples are 62 and 37 individuals from the Xinanzhuang site and the Heihelu site, respectively. Several ante-mortem injuries were found on the samples and were examined. Morphological and dimensional data, photographs and silicon casts of the injuries were collected. Furthermore I managed to obtain archaeological data from both sites from the Anyang field station researcher.
