Report:Hamada Yuzuru

Date:2008/09/05 - 2008/10/07

Field survey was conducted in Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, and information of primate distribution and present status was collected in Cambodia. DNA and parasite samples (feces) were collected from pet and free-ranging primates. In south of 17o N until the southern border and east of Mekong River in Laos, northern Pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina leonina) is found to be distributed most widely, and rhesus (Macaca mulatta) and lorises (Loris bengalensis, L. pygmaeus) are next. Stump-tailed macaques (Macaca arctoides), Douc Langur (Pygathrix spp. ) and Gibbons (Nomascus spp. ) are found in Truongson mountain range, and although low frequency, Assamese macaques (Macaca assamensis) are found in areas north of 15. 2o N in the range. Long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) are found in areas south of 15. 2o N in mountainous riverine forests. In eastern Thailand, pig-tailed and long-tailed macaques are found but stump-tailed were not. In, Con Dao Islands, Vietnam, an endemic subspecies of long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis condorensis) was observed and their distribution was determined.
