A short survey on the management of captive non-human primates for research support

Report:Suzuki Juri

Date:2009/02/01 - 2009/02/15

I visited four National Primate Research Centers (NPRCs) of United States to see veterinarian activities for daily medical care, colony managements and animal welfare. I learnt new tips on how to manage monkeys and activities with good condition.
The most important activities are establishing SPF (Special Pathogen Free) colonies and driving forward on environmental enrichment program. All of those NPRCs had established basic SPF colonies. Furthermore, three of those are establishing "super-clean" SPF colonies. Some different pair-housing systems are tested and used for social enrichment for macaques.
These experiences are very valuable and useful for us to improve our system in the near future.

Various toys, nests and branches are put in the cage for environmental enrichment.
