Introduction

The Field Research Center (FRC) has five field research areas in Japan, i.e. Shimokita, Joshinetsu, Kiso, Koshima, and Yakushima. These research areas were established aiming at preserving major natural habitats of Japanese macaques and studying ecology of wild Japanese macaques in various ways.

Recently wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), being endemic to the islands of Japan, are reported to have shifted or diffused of their distribution from the interior to the edge of forests all over Japan, and have caused crop damages. We have been urged to tackle the conservation and management of this species, and thus have collected the information on the local populations to make the database about the distribution, population size, and conservation/management status. We have also studied the ecology and behaviors of monkeys living near crop fields and villages, and developed the methods and techniques to control crop damage by monkeys to reduce the conflict between monkeys and humans.
