HOPE reportNumber:20-032 Preliminary analysis of the Pliocene colobine fossils from Udunga, southern Siberia Report:Masanaru Takai Date:2008/05/16 - 2008/05/25 I have visited Prof. Nikolai P. KalmykovDuring of the
Southern Sciencific Centre (SSC), Russian Academy of Science (RAS), in
Rostov-na-Donu, Russia from May 16th through May 25th, 2008. Many
mammalian fossils, including colobine monkey, are housed at the laboratory
of Prof. Kalmykov of SSC, which have been collected from the middle
Pliocene sediments of Udunga, Transbaikalia, southern Sibelia. During my
stay in Rostov I observed the fossil specimens of these Udunga mammals
including primates. The Udunga fauna, which includes eight mammalian
orders (Lagomorpha, Rodentia, Primates, Carnivora, Artiodactyla,
Perissodactyla, Proboscidea, Hyracoidea), is expected to play an important
role for the analysis of the evolutionary history of the Eurasian
primates. This time, I have examined mainly primates and artiodactyls
specimens, and measured some of these specimens, using caliper and took
some mould of the specimens for making the replicas for detailed analysis.
