HOPE reportNumber:19-057 Laboratory visit at the Max Plank Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology Report:MIURA Yui Date:2007/12/10 - 2008/03/03 I visited and stayed at the Max Plank Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany.
The department of developmental and comparative psychology which I visited has three research areas; primate cognition, human social cognition and language development.
Researchers in each section actively arrange the opportunities to present studies and exchange opinions to introduce new ideas.
I presented my on-going research in the seminar and could get helpful comments and suggestions from the audience.
Under the supervision of Dr.
Michael Tomasello and Dr.
Hannes Rakoczy, I also conducted the experiment on German- speaking children to explore their understanding of speaker's strength of certainty based on prosodic and lexical cues.
The pilot study so far has provided me with interesting data, suggesting the different developmental pattern from that of the Japanese participants.
The continued data collection and analysis will reveal the cultural and linguistic factors that could make this difference.
