The functional morphological analyses of the locomotion apparatus of the domesticated bovids and fowls, and their related wild animal populations in Vietnam.

Report:Endo Hideki

Date:2007/09/23 - 2007/09/26

The natural history specimens stored in Institutes of Ecological and Biological Resources (IEBR) of Vietnam were comparatively examined. We examined the functional-morphological variations in the Saola and domesticated fowls. The Saola is a rare bovid species that was discovered in 1990s as anew species from Vietnam. The well-known serows and anoas may belong to the taxonomic group closely-related to the Saola, however, the morphological characteristics of the Saola have remained unclear. In addition, the differences of the functional-morphological strategies between the Saola and the other domesticated bovids have not yet been clarified. In this plan, therefore, the specific morphological adaptation of the mastication system in the Saola is being examined from the osteometrical data. The functional-morphological variations of the musculoskeletal systems are examined between the breeds adapted to each style of the consumptions. The morphological data obtained in Vietnam on the part of the hindlimb and neck regions are compared with those of the layers examined in Japan.
