Discussions for the joint studies "Mechanisms and Adaptations in the Evolution of the Face Flattening in Humans"

Takeshi Nishimura

Period of visit: 17th October,2005-26th October,2005

Max-Plank Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Germany

I visited Prof. J.-J. Hublin at the Max-Plank Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig, Germany, to discuss about our joint collaboration on "Mechanisms and Adaptations in the Evolution of the Face Flattening in Humans". I was told about two high-performance CT scanners which were recently introduced at his laboratory. We agreed to scan first the collection of chronological-age-known human cranium housed at the Strasbourg Medicine Faculty. The data that will be acquired should be useful for various future studies other than our study. I also visited the Strasbourg Medicine Faculty, Strasbourg, France and the Royal Museum of Central Africa, Tervuren, Belgium to survey the human and chimpanzee collections, respectively. These discussions and preliminary surveys facilitate the smooth implementation of our joint research after the next year.
