Functional morphological study of hominoid thoracic skeleton.
KAGAYA MIYUKI
Period of invitation: 22th Oct,2005 - 20th Dec,2005
At the three institutes, 77 specimens were measured. To quantify
thoracic cage shape, each pair of ribs and corresponding vertebrates were
articulated and photographed from the cranial and lateral directions. From
the photographs, rib cage contour were digitized and fitted into
three-dimensional Bezier curve to extract variables which characterize the
curvatures. Vertebral body length, manubrium width, clavicle length,
scapular length, and angle of humeral torsion were also measured for
analyzing relation to the rib cage shape.Data of thoracic skeleton of
Indriid specimens were collected at Berlin Natural History Museum.
Orang-utan and silvery lutung were measured at State Zoological
Collection, Munich. Hominoid and New World monkey specimens were measured
at University of Zurich. I exchanged information of current research
progresses with Prof. Dr. Zollikofer and members of the laboratory at
University of Zurich. I visited exhibition of Berlin Natural History
Museum which is educative to demonstrate why and how to collect, keep, and
manage the specimens.
