Morphological Studies on Orangutan Fossils from Southeast Asia and Miocene Hominoids

KUNIMATSU Yutaka

Period of visit: 16th Octorber,2005-20th November,2005

National Museum of Natural History in Leiden

In Thailand, I participated in the International Symposium on Southeast Asian Primate Research "Biodiversity Study from DNA to Ecosystem", and gave an oral presentation on the recent discoveries of Miocene hominoid fossils in this country. In the Netherlands, I visited the National Museum of Natural History in Leiden, where a large number of fossils that Eugene Dubois collected in Indonesia many decades ago are stored. I examined the orangutan fossils in this Dubois collection, which were discovered from a few cave sites in Sumatra. In Germany, I visited the Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg, and observed the orangutan fossils, as well as some human and gibbon fossils, which were collected by G. H. R. von Koenigswald in Java. In Greece, I observed the fossils of Greek Miocene hominoid Ouranopithecus macedoniensis stored at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and compared them with large-bodied Miocene hominoids from Kenya, East Africa. During my stay, I had several opportunities to discuss with Prof. Koufos the relationships between Eurasian and African Miocene hominoids.
